“You don't join a Board of Directors for the pay! It's committed volunteering; it has to be 'fun'.”

Testimonial by Geneviève Grenier

Geneviève Grenier crossed paths with CAH through the Gilles-Barbeau Golf Tournament, in which she participated as a school trustee for MonAvenir. Before the pandemic, she traveled extensively for work. Then, everything stopped. “I had time to give…,” says Geneviève, who now holds the positions of Board Chair for the MonAvenir school board and the Club canadien, while serving her third term as a school trustee.

“I noticed an advertisement from CAH looking for new Board members. It’s a different challenge from the school board, which is a large organization with 5,000 employees in 60 schools. I wanted to better understand the issues of a small non-profit organization. When you’re involved in several organizations, it pays off so much! You can more easily create connections between different players in the community. This way, we avoid cannibalizing our efforts and resources to advance things in the Francophone community.”

For those interested in joining a Board, Geneviève recommends becoming familiar with the organization (the website and reports posted there are a good starting point) and understanding the responsibilities of the role of director on a board. You can contact the Board Chair to be invited to a meeting and experience the atmosphere around the table. “You don’t join a Board for the pay! It’s committed volunteer work, it has to be enjoyable,” she concludes.
